Chapter 1 - Part 1: Somethin's Amiss in Southern MO

Chapter 1 - Part 1: Somethin's Amiss in Southern MO.

Prairie's Edge

The town of Prairie’s Edge Missouri is that sort of town you just don’t expect any kind o’ trouble.  Its folk are kindly to one another, and they even tolerate the occasional passer through.  However, the entire population tends to git a bit nonplussed when a stranger climbs out of a carriage in the middle of the night and then has audacity to keep to himself to his rooms (yes he bought them all up) for days at a time.  He’s been holed up at Harold’s, the local drinking hole and Inn.  A few busybodies claim to have seen odd flashes of light comin' from the upstairs windows and few can forget the night when one of those very same windows shattered into the street below.

Now Harold is the type of man that can talk to anyone, ain’t a soul in town that don’t respect the man.  Part o’ his charm though lies with his tight lips when it comes to other people’s business, anyone who's been fool enough to touch upon the subject of the odd man upstairs has gotten a full steely stare down from the barber turned innkeeper.  They were always smart enough to drop the subject.

Let it be known though, the people of Prairie’s Edge, MO. can be a forgiving lot.  The odd man had been living in those rooms for nearly 3 weeks and even the busiest of bodies had taken it upon themselves to lose interest.  That is, until a few missives went out.  The young boy who delivers the mail to the pony man for everyone claims to have seen letters handed to Harold by the stranger himself.  A shame the young boy ain’t never been taught to read or he’d know who they were to, a glaring oversight in the boy’s upbringing to say the least.  Their interest was peaked again but nothing seemed to come of it, and there ain't a soul who would ask a pony man regarding someone else's mail, ain't proper.  “Oh, well” the town seemed to say collectively as it turned it’s interest on far more routine  matters, like what Old Man Teddy was up to, or even that youngin’ Cal who provided safe delivery for the town’s whisky.  At least those two had the decency to be citizens of their fair town!

It is truly a shame they stopped paying attention, one of them might have been privy to another late night arrival.  This time by a number of men come to greet the fellow.  They may have even been surprised to see two of their own amongst the posse.  It was as strange as things come, but alas no one was up and about to witness it.  A missed opportunity, to say the least.  Perhaps something would come along tomorrow.

Harold's Inn and Saloon

You all arrive in front of Harold's at an ungodly hour of the night, the dust blows down the street between your boots.  There is an energy in the air that seems to crackle between you all, deep in your guts you have an odd feeling that seems to tell you you're meant to be here at this time.  At the same time however a shiver of fear, or caution rolls down your backside.

Without a word you move forward through the swinging doors and it's as if the energy and odd feelings drop away to nothing.  You feel like you could speak again if you wished.  A man stands behind the bar and nods to you as you enter.

Harold

"I'm supposin' y'all must be the one's he sent for?" the man says in a silk voice, "Course you are, no other posse of men would come to my place this time o' night if you weren't." He pauses and pulls up a bottle of dusty whiskey.  "Pull up a stool and I'll hand over the first round on the house, A.G isn't quite ready for ya, he'll be down soon though.  Meanwhile, why don't you make some introductions, he made mention some of you would be strangers to one another." He reaches out a hand to Teddy and Cal and smiles "Good to see you boys, nice to know we have a few locals in on what's at stake in this town."
*********************************************************************************

The group settles into uneasy chatter regarding the odd scenario but libation proves to help settle some nerves.  Harold proves to be rattled by something and freely pours his stock into the glasses.  Before long a voice is heard overhead welcoming the group to Harold's Saloon, explaining how happy she is they are there.  Yes, A.G., or Agatha as she calls herself, appears to be a woman and not a man as many believed.  Even some in the town.  She states that she frequently uses the guise, but why the caution?

Agatha

Agatha bids the men move their meet and greet into her rooms upstairs, and Harold seems quick to move them that direction.  Cautioning them to hear her out.

The Map Agatha drew in the middle of the night

***********************************************************************************

Agatha has been cut off mid sentence by a commotion outside, seems an old enemy of Cal's has come out for blood.  A real old enemy that is, one who seems to have been dead for quite a spell!

Call drew in a deep breath through his nose, taking in the familiar and comforting smell of the bar. Tobacco, whiskey and leather were as calming to Cal as lilac and sage to a lass. This was where he truly felt home.

Harold and Cal had a nice easy relationship. Harold gave Cal whiskey, Cal gave Harold money. Simple. Cal liked things simple. This whole secret meeting and threat on his life had him a bit irritated.

Cal tipped his stetson hat toward Harold. "Much obliged," he said simply, mounting a stool.

"Who is this A.G. fella anyhow? And who are y'all fellas? Never seen some of ya in my long life."

Teddy downs the whiskey in a gulp, wipes his mouth with his suit jacket that he's always wearing, and turns towards Harold, "Thanks, Harry. I haven't been down here much, been working out of my apartment on odd fix-up jobs. My wife used to love it here, you remember."

He lays Trusty Kate across his lap and pats a sandbag at his hip like a baby, then says, "I'm Teddy Parlor, nice to meet you all I s'pose. Looks like you all got quite the armament. We've got enough firearms for a small brigade no doubt."

      Harold refills Teddy's shot glass

"As fer who A.G. is I don't rightly know his proper name any more than you do. He's... well he's opened my eyes to somethin' that's been botherin' me deep down about this town that I hadn't realized was botherin' me, and I trust him for that. I'll see if he can open yer all's eyes as well, don't trust I could do it."

Teddy peers into the dark corners of Harold’s Saloon, looking for… well anything. He knows their mysterious “friend” A.G. is likely here somewhere but it seems the fella must actually be in his rooms rather than hiding in a darkened corner. No sign of villains afoot either, just tables and chairs.

Well, there’s also the piano. That lovely little melody machine that the misses loved so much. Once Teddy catches glimpse of that he sort of forgets what he’s looking for.

  8. [Dr. Fitzroy, nervous]

Last through the swinging saloon door is Dr. Patrick Fitzroy, a slight, bespectled man. He is plainly dressed, his modest suit dusty and stained from his journey west. He wears a gunbelt with a holstered LeMat pistol, though both the belt and the gun look out of place on him.

He enters warily, his eyes shifting to each of the other men and back to the door quickly and uneasily, like a rabbit caught in a trap. He clutches a small, worn Bible in his right hand, a rosary wrapped around his knuckles. He quielty repeats the Lord's Prayer to himself, stopping briefly to acknowledge and nod to each of the other men in the saloon. "Wa-water, please." he says to Harold, his voice barely above a whisper.

He moves to the far end of the bar and fails miserably to look at ease, keeping one eye on the group and the other on the exit.

"Why, thank ya, Harold - this'll be just the thing to wash away the dust from my throat." He takes the whiskey, sloshes it around his mouth for a second, and downs it.

"Gentlemen, name's Jedidiah Parrish - you can call me Jed. I see you're all wonderin' as much as I am about this here A.G. fella. Y'all got the same type o' summons, I presume?

"'Nother whiskey, if you please, Harold."

Jed pulls up a stool as Harold suggested and sits. Reaching in his jacket pocket, he extracts a deck of playing cards. Shuffling them absentmindedly, he casually asks, "I don't suppose any of you'd be up for a friendly game while we wait for our host, would ya?"

Jedidiah’s seen his fair share of Saloons and he can tell this one runs the way of being mostly for common folk, not his usual dive. Something tells him he’d have a few easy marks in this town if he played a game of Stud but it would likely not be a lasting engagement if he truly took from these folk. Out of the corner of his eye he catches a glimpse of a few plants growing near the windows, he’s no expert on plants but one of the stalks was unmistakable as corn. Seems odd to be trying to grow corn in a planter, but Hell you aren’t going to have much luck growing corn in the desert so why not? For a second Jedidiah feels like that thought is the most ridiculous thing ever but he can’t put his finger on why exactly. The feeling quickly passes though.

"Rode here from Boston Teddy. I was heading out West when I received A.G.'s letter. Something told me I needed to come here"

Despite trying to keep his cool, Anthony is nervous. These men look serious and he has only just finished college, but he trusts in his knowledge and his Grandfathers guidance.

Jed whistles. "Boston?! You don't say! Now, Tony, that's quite a distance to come. Not meanin' to pry, but what ever would make you want ta leave the Union for these here parts?" Jed smiles warmly, genuinely interested in Tony's story, or at least the short version of it - he doesn't meet many folk from the North, at least not as young and nervous-looking as Tony. He's also hoping a little friendly conversation might calm Tony down. Nervous and armed makes for a dangerous combination, Jed thinks to himself, his eyes darting momentarily to the Bible-clutcher at the end of the bar, then back to Tony.

After Teddy’s inquiry, Harold eyeballs Dr. Fitzroy and slides a water to the man.

HAROLD: “There are those who don’t trust a man who doesn’t take a pull of whiskey now and then. I’m no fool so I say I’ve seen more to distrust from a man with a gut full o’ piss than the man who don’t drink. However, why don’t you speak up and give us your name good sir? Dr. Fitzroy looks down at his water momentarily before drinking it, letting the refreshing, if somewhat dirty, water calm his nerves a little. He stands, setting his Bible on the bar, and straightens his tie and spectacles. Clearing his throat, he says "Well, it is unbecoming to be looked upon as the sort that is distrustful. Gentlemen, I am Dr. Patrick Fitzroy of the Secon... also of Boston." He nods respectfully to the young Mr. Kelly at the mention of their shared home.

He looks at Harold, and says "I'll have that whiskey, my good man. For it is said, 'It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.' Matthew 15:11."

Suddenly, you hear a voice from the upstairs balcony that cuts through your introductions.

VOICE: “Gentlemen, thank you for coming at this late hour and under such unusual circumstances. I hope Harold has provided you with the means to clear the dust from your throats? If you wish for more to drink of whatever your poison might be please know that it will be on my nigh unending tab with Harold.” A figure steps forward from the shadows.

Looks like A.G. wasn’t a “fella” at all, a striking brunette leans against the railing.

Agatha: “My name is Agatha, I’m certain you have many questions. I hope I have the answers you need, but as you rightly assume I’ve invited you here to assist me in a matter that is most dire. I apologize if at any time I may have concealed or outright misdirected you about my gender, but I find it useful to were the guise of a man from time to time. For now perhaps we can move things upstairs, I have repurposed Harold’s rooms for the occasion.”

With that she turns and heads into the room behind her.

"Pleased to meet you, Ma'am," he responds to her greeting. When she finishes speaking, he asks Harold for another whiskey before following Miss Agatha upstairs.

"Looks like we'll have our friendly game later, Tony. I'm interested in hearing what our hostess has to say."

Picking up the whiskey, Jed stands to head upstairs, but not before shooting a ponderous glance at the planter near the windows for a second or two.

Harold hands the bottle of whiskey to Cal, and then say loud enough for all to hear.

"Keep the drinks flowin' Cal, but not too much. Y'all will need the edge taken off ta' hear what she has ta' say but I don't think you need to wake up tomorrow tellin' yourself it was all a drunken dream or joke. It took me a bit to believe her words but after I took a look around me an' pondered them, she has to be right."

Harold pauses and looks through his swinging doors.

"I hope she's right about you lot too."

With that it's evident he feels in no mood to talk further and you all make your way upstairs to Agatha's rooms.

  22. [GM]

    [FLUFF]

As you make your way to the top of the stairs you note the four doors that would commonly account for the four small rooms Harold keeps for the occasional stay-on in Prairie's Edge. The first door is open and everyone files in. Immediately you notice that the walls once separating the rooms have been removed, thus creating one lengthy room. Agatha has apparently determined that she will be here a while, and Harold has allowed quite the level of deference in how she keeps her rooms... or rather room.

The windows have been shuttered and heavy black curtains hang, it is plain to see that the candles and oil lamps lit about the room form the only light it likely sees, even during daylight hours. Agatha has positioned herself behind a lectern while chairs and couches have been pushed into rows as if this were school or church. She beckons you all to sit.

Whether or not the group does so she eventually speaks.

"Hello again gentlemen, as I mentioned a few moments ago my name is Agatha. I...well..I called you here..."

It is plain she is struggling to decide where to begin. Finally she knocks over the lectern!

"Damnation, I'm just not good at this! What the Hell was I thinking, that you all were my students and I a professor!?"

She sits on the fallen Lectern and stares at the group sincerely.

"I'm sure Harold hasn't minced words so I won't neither, Prairie's Edge is in trouble. Hell, I think the whole world is in trouble these days but Prairie's Edge and the surrounding land seems to be gettin' some of the worst of it. I represent a group of people who keep track of this sort of thing. I have a sort of gift when it comes to recruitment so that's typically my duty, but in this case that gift went to finding you all."

She pauses, gets up and grabs the whiskey bottle from Cal's hand and takes a strong pull and grimaces at the burn.

"Ahh... that's better. I don't know why you would believe me but there's strange things at work round these parts dangerous and strange. I haven't figured out what's causing it but the fact that the townsfolk go about their daily lives without realizing it is all the more cause for concern."

As you all stare blankly wondering what she could be talking about she just blurts it out.

"You can't see it either can you... cacti on the roads, a veritable desert for miles, critters never seen in these parts running around with tongues lolling out? Prairie's Edge and for miles around it is a wasteland gentlemen, and there's dark forces at work turnin it so!"

All at once it crashes into your minds. Hell, the tickle of doubt has been there in your head all along, why the Hell hadn't you seen it!? Agatha sees the looks on your faces and calms.

"You see it now, don't you? I really did pick the right men."

  23. "You know," Cal said thoughtfully, as he thought back over the last few days. The land had blighted, and he hadn't even noticed!

As if she'd just told Cal that there was a nose on his face, and he was realizing he'd never noticed it before, the realization that the land had died was like a punch in the face.

How could a full grown man, of relatively sound mind (who had grown up on a farm!) not have even noticed the fertile plains had gone to brown dust??

He realizes he hadn't finished his thought, and had just sat there with his jaw hung slack.

Agatha crosses the room and grabs a yellowed newspaper from the bedside table. She lays it out in front of the group. "The Tombstone Epitaph".

"There is a man who writes in this paper, you may have heard of him, his name is Lacey O'Malley. He and a fair number of others, myself included, are part of a club called the "Explorer's Society". We have a better idea than most regarding what's been going on. There's evil in this world. True evil. Evil beyond the understanding of most folks. Some of us try to fight it."

Agatha takes another pull from her whiskey and holds a clenched fist to her head.

"Damn migraine... I made mention of it some in my letters but I can see things, important things. I catch glimpses from time to time of the future, faces of people who can be trusted, places of interest. Things like that, I can't put a finger on what exactly causes it nor am I capable of controlling it. It just happens. I awoke one morning a few weeks after being here wit your names, faces, and where to send the letters. It was one of the more powerful visions I ever had. I also found this map I had apparently drawn in the night."

She lays out a map of the surrounding area, it showed Prairie's Edge in the middle of a large triangle with points at three places. The top mark landed somewhere in the Ozarks, the western mark lay near the Kansas City-Little Rock rail line, and the Eastern one located in the woodlands.

"I don't know what these places are but I have a strong suspicion that whatever power is worming its way into these lands originates from those locales. I wish I knew more about how y'all are supposed to come into play but other than the fact you all appear very capable individuals, I've got nothing else to go on."

Agatha's face looks tired as she looks at everyone once more.

"Please say you'll help, or even keep asking questions because every time you ask me something its just one more chance I'll have to sway you to do more than sit on the sidelines while this goes down. And it will go down unless we intervene, these dark forces I spoke of, while I don't know for sure what's behind them I do know that they can be stopped. We've done it before. I also know what happens if they aren't stopped. You all may be capable, Hell you probably have all it takes to get outta dodge easily enough before things go bad but mark my words something has tied you to these events and I wasn't lying when I say I can't be certain something won't follow you if you do skeedatle."

With that Agatha takes a seat on the overturned lectern once more and waits for further questions.

"Please, tell us more about the Explorer's Society, what evil do they fight?"

    Agatha looks to Jed

“So you can touch into the magiks of this world as well? I’m certainly glad another is amongst us, at least you can provide a little proof for the rest of these gentlemen. If they need more convincing of the strangeness of our world today. I have it on good authority from the older members of the Explorer’s Society that such things were not within the capabilities of man in the past, something happened to allow such abilities into this world.”

“As far as the Explorer’s Society goes, we are men and women who have come into contact with the unnatural elements of this world. Usually those unnatural elements come in the form of truly terrifying things. This wasted land is but the tip of a mountain as to possible problems in this town. I’ve seen the dead come back to life and walk gentlemen. I have seen horrid creatures I wish not to describe. It always seems that the fears of the townsfolk start becoming reality, which only exacerbates further fear and seems to encourage more and more horrors to befall them. Unless people stand up to it that is, and that is just what we try to do in the Society. We stand against this tide of evil where we can. I-“

Agatha’s impassioned speech is suddenly interrupted by the crack of a gunshot heard outside and the sound of a man’s voice.

VOICE: “Calvin Dalton!” another gunshot “I know yer in there pard’! Why don’ you come’on out’chere so’s we can have ourselves a lil’ conversin’!?“

Cal swallows the tight feeling he suddenly feels in his chest. “It can’t be”, he thinks to himself, “he’s been dead for weeks now… I strung him up myself, we put bullets in his boys too!” He peers out the window like everyone else. Sure enough, Pete Jenkins stands next to a horse down below, his six gang members stand beside him in the flesh, or what’s left of their flesh. Pete still has the rope around his neck, and all seven of them are missing chunks from their faces. God only knows what they look like under their very dusty garments.

Cal doesn’t know how but Pete was back, seemingly…from the grave.

    PETE: “Where are ye’ CAL!?”

    [CRUNCH]

    CAL: Roll 1 SPIRIT (vs. Fear):D8 & Wild Die:D6

    Results:

D8 = 4 (Success) Though understandably shaken Cal is not afraid.

    D6 = 2 (Failure)

Jed looks out the window upon what looks like rotting corpses, but are walkin' and talkin' like they don't know they ain't supposed to do that. "Uh, Cal? What were these men hung for? Somethin' tells me that whatever it was, hangin' wasn't enough punishment."

Regaining a little of his composure, Jed says, "It looks like you fellas will get the convincin' Miss Agatha asked me for real soon." He checks his gun to make sure it's loaded; satisfied with his iron, Jed concentrates for a second, and colors dance briefly along his fingers, then disappear before you're sure you saw them.

"I reckon things'll get as ugly as them."

  33. [Tony, horrified by what he sees]

    [Fluff]

Tony looks out of the window and sees the men below. Their faces are rotting and their eyes are blank. He's seen terrifying spirits before, but these men look more solid than anything he's ever witnessed.

Taking his rifle from his shoulder, Tony ensures that it's loaded. He then reaches into his bag and pulls out a dusty textbook.

"Miss Agatha, what the hell are these things!?!"

Although he's never seen anything like this before, Tony trusts that there may be something in his book that will help them

  34. [Calvin Dalton, a little Shaken (not stirred)]

    [Fluff]
"Jenkins Boys," he said flatly. "Cattle rustlers. Used to attack my wagon from time to time."

Cal casually loaded his shot gun, knowing a fight was inevitable. "Guess they missed me."

Cal's day quickly went from simple to entirely too complicated. Wordlessly, Cal started down the stairs, shotgun in hand, intent on simplifying things.

Agatha sees Cal walking downstairs and whispers fiercely.

"Look now across the street, there's people watching this whole thing go down and they aren't batting an eyelash over it. Believe itor not gents but they don't see the rotted flesh dripping from these creature's bones. All they see is an outlaw callin' out Cal Dalton! If I were you boys, I'd get ready for a fight! Someone needs to follow Cal, he's going to be mighty lonely down there soon.

Harold watches Cal descend the stairs and gives a knowing nod.

"Be careful out there boy, them creatures are unnatural. I wouldn't go walking out into the open road if I was you."

Pete Jenkins laughs a bit outside the saloon.

"Guess you jus' too chicken liver ta' come out an' face me Dalton! Inn't that right boys!?"

If the "boys" were supposed to respond Pete was left unsatisfied because they did not appear to have the same light of intelligence in their eyes... they just looked hungry.

  36. [Jed, still fearful but resolute]

"Yeah, Cal, Miss Agatha's right - don't go down there by yourself. This ain't about bein' yellow - those Jenkins Boys ain't exactly human now."

Placing his hand on his gun, he addresses the rest of the group, "Fellas, what do you say to helpin' Cal here - seven against one is just way too outgunned."

Inwardly, Jed prays that the cards are in their favor tonight. He just may get to gamble after all. He walks to the door to join Cal, briefly pausing to wait for the others' decisions.

  37. [Doc Fitzroy, taken aback]

    [Fluff]

Doc looks out the window and crosses himself at the sight in the street. He's seen plenty of men killed on the battlefield, and buried far more than he'd like to remember, and this particular lot is most definitely dead. He places a hand on his gun and swallows, his mouth suddenly gone dry.

"Ms. Agatha, is there a way for us to get out of this inn and to some horses without those 'men' in the street seeing us?"

  38. [Teddy, spitting out the window to test the winds]

"Things's dead should stay dead." Says Teddy, hoisting Trusty Kate up to his arm. His long dirty white beard is clumped around the sweat that begins to trickle from his chin.

"I'll cover you boys from up here. Go put 'em back in the ground, if that's at all possible. We might just have to bury them so deep they can't crawl out."

    [OOC]

Teddy will stay and snipe from the window, and open it if it's not already open.

  39. [Tony, still flicking through his book]

    [Fluff]

"There's not much in here on the dead rising, but from what I can see destroying their heads is our best bet boys."

Tony returns his textbook to his bag and stands up. He only met these people tonight, but there's evil in this town and someone needs to do something. His grandfather used to say that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Tony was not going to do nothing.

"I'm with you Mr. Dalton, lets put these boys back in the ground"

Rolling Knowledge (Supernatural) with a +2 (Due to Paranormal book and schooling) to see if Tony actually knows to aim for the head with Zombies.

      D4-2+2 = 3 (Failure)

D6-2+2 = 6+3 (Success with a raise) Knows his stuff, so he knows head shots will hurt more!
